Fortnite Pirate Shop Token: odds, squads & chest rules
Understand which chests to search, how opening versus breaking works, what Epic’s event text and creator footage say about squad sharing, and how Fortune Sprites speed up your route.
Quick answers: chest rules & odds at a glance
About 1 in 700,000 per chest
Epic Games has not published official drop percentages. Community estimates cited by Forbes (Paul Tassi) place Pirate Shop Access around 1 in 700,000 per chest, and no pity timer or guaranteed hour count has been announced.
Safest opening method: Use the normal Search prompt on regular, buried, rare vault and Sprite chests. Direct pickaxing can trigger treasure prizes (TG Plays (24:33)), but normal Search is the unambiguous baseline.
Do not smash portable toilets: Break only the upper roof layer, drop inside the stall, and Search the chest directly (NNF (02:58)).
Squads & playlists: Play regular public Battle Royale or Zero Build (avoid bot lobbies, Reload and Creative). Creator videos report squad sharing, which increases total chests opened—not individual chest odds.
Optional Sprites: Fortune Chester scans floors in tall buildings; Fortune Plundarrgh boosts speed after opening a chest.
Which chests count toward your search?
Crossbones Isle maps display four chest layers. Epic’s event overview states: “When you open a Chest in Battle Royale, there’s a chance that every player on your squad will win a free reward.” Source: Epic event text reproduced in NOOB NOOB FRUIT’s description. Here is how each container type fits into a practical farming route:
| Container type | How to handle it on your route | Evidence scope |
|---|---|---|
| Regular chests | Your primary volume target across buildings, tents, docks and shoreline rocks. Use the normal Search prompt whenever accessible. | Core container shown in winner clips (Osky winning replay (03:09); NNF winner clip (04:23)) |
| Buried treasure mounds | Hit the glowing sand mound with your pickaxe until the chest surfaces, then Search it. Concentrated at The Chest and the northeast offshore island. | Core route target in Osky Stop 2 (03:53) and Home Of Games digging route (05:31) |
| Rare / Vault chests | Open when you find one along your route or when you already hold a Vault Key for a nearby vault (four rare chests + one supply chest). | tmnglv opens vault rare chests (00:53) as a bonus, while noting his own prize pulls came from normal chests |
| Sprite Chests | Open when directly on your path (such as Stop 1 and Stop 5 on the northeast coast) or when you need a Sprite companion. | Creators (Osky (07:15); AtlantaFN (03:20)) state Sprite Chests can roll rewards; primarily used for Sprites |
Key takeaway: prioritize total unlooted chests opened per minute (see our three routes) rather than skipping normal chests to hunt only vaults or rare chests.
Opening vs. breaking chests: what is shown vs. what is unverified
Players frequently ask whether pickaxing a chest or breaking the floor beneath it counts the same as holding Search. The reviewed footage supports a clear distinction between triggering a Treasure Hunt prize by direct chest destruction and assuming every destruction shortcut rolls the Pirate Shop Token.
| Method | Recommended action | What the source footage shows |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Search interaction | Baseline method. Use the standard Search prompt whenever you can reach the chest directly. | Shown in the reviewed winner footage and described in the event guidance. |
| Pickaxing a chest or its support | Acceptable for fast looting when a chest is awkward to reach, but prefer normal Search when standing right beside it. | TG Plays discusses breaking chests (03:41) and unlocks Solid Gold Gauntlets on screen (22:43 (TG Plays, 22:43) / 24:33 (TG Plays, 24:33)). That confirms treasure prizes can trigger on break, without proving every break method rolls the Token. |
| Chest inside a portable toilet | Do not smash the toilet stall. Break only the upper roof layer, drop inside the toilet, and Search the chest directly. | NOOB NOOB FRUIT’s Arlong Park guide (02:58) specifically warns that destroying the toilet enclosure may not count as opening the chest. |
| Indirect builds, cars or shockwaving locked vaults | Do not rely on these shortcuts. Use a Vault Key to open locked vaults normally. | TG Plays notes cone-breaking (08:41) or running chests over with a car (TG Plays, 23:24) likely does not count. Home Of Games shockwaves locked vault walls (07:25), but Token eligibility is not established. |
Squad sharing, AFK claims & mode eligibility
How squad sharing works across reward types
Epic’s event overview reproduced in NOOB NOOB FRUIT’s description states that when you open a chest in Battle Royale, “there’s a chance that every player on your squad will win a free reward. Most of the time, this will be a Gizmo, but there’s a chance that you get a cosmetic reward. There’s also an extremely slim chance to get access to the Pirate Shop.”
Multiple creators (NOOB NOOB FRUIT (00:34); tmnglv (01:14)) report that squad sharing applies to Pirate Shop Access as well as Locker cosmetics and Gizmos. To make a squad count, split floors or adjacent buildings so four active players search four different sets of chests—increasing your team’s total chest volume rather than multiplying the odds of a single chest.
What not to rely on: AtlantaFN mentions unverified community claims (01:41) about sitting AFK in a party lobby, hiding AFK in-match, or assuming early-match chests have higher odds. None of those shortcuts—or eliminated/spectating edge cases—are backed by official rules. Load into the match and actively search with your team.
Mode eligibility: stick to public BR or Zero Build
Start in regular public Battle Royale or Zero Build matches (Solo, Duos, Trios or Squads). Both build and no-build public playlists use the Crossbones Isle map and Treasure Hunters chest pool.
- Bot Lobbies, Reload & Creative: Do not farm in bot lobbies, Reload or Creative maps. AtlantaFN notes (03:35) that Treasure Hunters token drops are not observed in bot lobbies or Reload, and Osky uses a custom match (01:26 (Osky, 01:26)) strictly to tour his route layout after winning earlier.
- What about Ranked? AtlantaFN reports (02:46) finding no tokens during a 10-hour Ranked session and seeing no Ranked winner clips. While a single creator’s dry run does not prove an official Ranked ban, regular public Battle Royale or Zero Build avoids Ranked fights and keeps your chest volume higher.
Fortune Sprites: which companion helps your route?
In-match Sprites are companion creatures with active gameplay abilities that you find in chests or Sprite Chests and save at an Extraction Crate. Do not confuse them with Item Shop Sidekicks (a cosmetic category where Pirate Shop Access allows claiming one unowned Sidekick). Neither Sprite below is required to start farming, and extra ordinary loot is not proven to create extra Token rolls.

Fortune Chester
Abilities: Reveals nearby chests through walls/floors, grants a chance to spawn extra ordinary loot from chests, and provides fall-damage immunity.
Best for: Vertical, multi-room POIs like Arlong Park, Lantern Landing and Cursed Cavern where chests sit stacked across floors (NNF Chester showcase (00:45)).

Fortune Plundarrgh
Abilities: Reveals nearby chests and grants a temporary movement sprint and pickaxe swing speed boost after opening a chest.
Best for: Digging buried treasure mounds at The Chest or moving quickly between stops on the northeast coast (Home Of Games Plundarrgh demo (05:31)).

Epic’s Treasure Hunters season announcement lists recurring Treasure Hours Sundays with boosted drops among the weekly event bonuses. Some creator videos (such as Home Of Games (10:38)) describe Sunday Treasure Hours as doubling every treasure prize rate.
Because Epic’s published announcement does not specify a fixed 2× Pirate Shop Token multiplier, treat Sunday Treasure Hours as a worthwhile bonus window—always checking the in-game lobby announcement for your local Sunday schedule—while continuing normal chest routes on any day of the week.
